Programming With Models: Modularity And Abstraction Provide Powerful Capabilities For Systems Biology

The Genome Projects constructed computational representations of the DNA of organisms, enabling in-silico analysis of genomes in place of in-vivo experiments.

Post-genomic systems biology seeks to construct computational representations of the systems of interacting proteins and cells which implement the organism's physiology and phenotype.

We have developed a novel computational infrastructure for constructing such representations.

It adapts the concepts of modularity and abstraction from engineering methodology to deal with the molecular complexity of biological systems and enables computational representations to be built which were previously infeasible.

Journal of the Royal Society Interface

Journal of the Royal Society Interface is the Society's cross-disciplinary publication promoting research at the interface between the physical and life sciences. It offers rapidity, visibility and high-quality peer review and is ranked fifth in JCR's multidisciplinary category. The journal also incorporates Interface Focus, a peer-reviewed, themed supplement, each issue of which concentrates on a specific cross-disciplinary subject.
